U.S., 1958, 115 min, 2K DCP, Dir. Vincente Minnelli, Not rated but suitable for children, Warner Bros.
"[Gigi] is not only a charming comprehension of the spicy confection of Colette, but it is also a lovely and lyrical enlargement upon that story's flavored mood and atmosphere … Vincente Minnelli has marshaled a cast to give a set of performances that, for quality and harmony, are superb." —Bosley Crowther, The New York Times
Gigi (Leslie Caron) is a sweet young girl raised by her loving aunt for the world's oldest profession in Belle Époque Paris. She is given to Gaston (Louis Jourdan), a family friend and heir to a sugar fortune but in spite of the rules between them, he falls in love with Gigi - upending a long-standing family tradition and throws their carefully ordered social circle into a flap. Adapted from Collete's novel of the same name, Gigi is a delightful musical that won a whopping nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and, naturally, Best Original Song and Best Music.
